BGW210-700 wifi hangs regularly, for several seconds at at time.

Internet access discussion, including Fusion, IP Broadband, and Gigabit Fiber!

I have Fusion Gigabit, and the connection is great, and I would have never noticed an issue had I not had to ship my Google WiFi access points elsewhere. Wired connections, and wireless connections through that mesh network (connected to the BGW210 via ethernet), were always extremely fast.

However, now that my Google WAPs are gone, I turned on the 5GHz radio on this gateway to serve my wifi. It is really bad. I've run through several configurations on both radios. I've analyzed the local RF and found entirely wide open channels for each radio. I've used DNS over TLS from the connected devices, but nothing helps. My speeds are way slower with fewer pieces of equipment in the loop.

For example, if I load a reddit comments thread 10 times (which calls beyond the edge to get latest comments), 3 to 5 of those requests will hang for greater than 5 seconds. The others will load fully in under 500ms. This is from several devices, utilizing each radio.

Any ideas?

Typically we would have you test different channels for the 5Ghz and make sure nothing is near the BGW210 that could cause interference with your WiFi. It sounds like you have already tested these settings with no success.

For troubleshooting sake I would have you test the speeds on a wired connection from the BGW210 to make sure its not an overall issue and isolate the problem.

It would also be a good idea to factory reset the BGW210 and test speeds before modifying any of the gateway settings.

It is rare for the BGW210 to be defective but if we have tested the above then a call to our support team to schedule an AT&T technician visit would be the next step.

Oh actually, the factory reset is a great idea. I'll report back.

Well, I did a factory reset, and it actually does seem to be performing better currently. I wish I could see the delta in configuration. It is still a very inconsistent wifi by comparison to any other device I've used, but is passable for the moment. If it degrades to the previous condition, I'll follow up.

Also, I'm not sure if this is related, but I get a ton of Transmit Discard Packets on the 5GHz radio. I've seen other people voice this same concern, but I haven't seen it addressed anywhere. Let me know if that is no big deal or potentially linked.

This helped the problem for less than a day, and now we're back to one of every few wifi requests hanging for several seconds. Terrible device.
