Is this line reaching it's maximum potential?

Code: Select all

Pre-qualification distance from sonic.net: 6,519 feet.
Pace 4111N details:
Attenuation: 39.5dB
Protocol: G.DMT2 Annex A Interleaved 0/35
Attenuation @300kHZ: 35.4 dB
Echo: -29.2 dB
Final Gain: 23.0 DB
Rate: 3211 kbs (Max 3544)
The calculator at http://fremnet.net/article/216/adsl-the ... calculator shows 9,400 feet, vs the "real" distance of 6,500.

Based on http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r269108 ... ance-chart this line seems to be low for the distance. The line had an ancient spark gap type connection block: bypassing that raised the speed to the above level (the sonic tech missed or did not care about this block).

Probably not. The "real" distance is just estimating a distance based on attenuation, so if we can do something to address the high attenuation we can probably address the speed as well. Even if the 9,400 foot estimate is accurate, 3.2 megabit is a bit on the low side. The median speed at that distance is about 4mbps.

This is where it might be nice to benchmark against nearby neighbors (admitting that "near" might not be "served by the same wire bundle".

And here's the punch line:
After learning that neighbors get up to 4.5 kbs,
I looked at the wiring, and noticed something odd. Yep, an extra wire leading to a dead phone jack with no DSL filter. Cutting that line results in:

Code: Select all

Attenuation 43.5dB down / 25.7 dB up
Echo: -21 dB
Final gain: 25.5 dB
Rate 4317 kbs (Max 4700 kbs).
