when I type in gateway.sonic.net i get the "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" even if i type the ip address....nothing....whats going on?

This is because "gateway.sonic.net" is not a valid host name. Looking up gateway.sonic.net yields:

C:\>nslookup gateway.sonic.net
Server: ns1.sonic.net
Address: 208.201.224.11

*** ns1.sonic.net can't find gateway.sonic.net: Non-existent domain

What IP address are you trying to use?

Try this instead: http://192.168.42.1/

Do you have the Sonic.net-supplied modem+router? If not, then the name isn't valid. If you do have that device, call 611, as Sonic.net will support it.

gateway.sonic.net is how i accessed the routers admin page.....it worked when i first installed it, but now neither that nor the ip address works....so cant access the routers options anymore.

Call 611. A helpful rep there will work with you to resolve it.

Hi,

gateway.sonic.net is resolved to 192.168.42.1 by the on-board DNS server in the Pace unit itself. If you aren't using its DNS, the name won't work. If you've bridged the Pace and are using a public IP instead of the default 192.168.42.x network, you'll have to switch back to it in order to access the router directly.

Try setting your system to use the IP address 192.168.42.5, with a gateway address of 192.168.42.1, subnet mask 255.255.255.0, and DNS server to 192.168.42.1 and you should be able to get back into it.

Yeah I was told that somehow I changed the setting and it is now in Bridged mode and that I need to reset the modem in order to access it again....I have not done that yet since my connection is running ok. Its a little sluggish so I think I will try to reset it today and see if things speed up. Thanks.

Isn't bridged more of a security problem, unless you have some other precaution set up?

The most common reason I see for folks wanting a bridge instead of a router is because there is already some other router that the end-user wants to have running the local area network. Having several routers stacked up behind each other can be troublesome with little to no security benefit.
