Hi everyone,

The sunset of legacy DSL service has been postponed until further notice, and we will be communicating this to impacted users as soon as we're able.

Thank you, Dan. Very much appreciate the update. While obviously not a permanent solution, at least we have some breathing room for now. I so wish that Sonic could expand into my area. Unfortunately, my previous requests in recent years for guidance on how to assist in making that a reality have gone unanswered.

...

Not to open a can of worms, but the telcom industry's efforts to end CLECs seems related. Cost of infrastructure & maintenance is certainly a factor (including for Sonic), but AT&T et al play a huge part in the greater picture.

I hate to use wikipedia as a source, but the current page on ILEC/CLEC does contain some relevant info (see "Important FCC rulings" and "Proposed termination").

AT&T is in a state of even greater dysfunction and turmoil than I have ever seen, but they still seem dead set on detouring, decommissioning and dismantling the legacy and copper infrastructure wherever possible. In my and others' opinions, they have done some dirty tricks across the country to forcefully move customers off legacy or analog services so they can claim there is no "customer demand" for the old copper products and services, thus giving an excuse to shut them down.

This is all despite past and present examples of how rural areas and things like emergency services have been/will be impacted. The U.S. has a major divide between those who have, and those who do NOT have access to "broadband" internet. Our current crisis only underscores the point.

I called on Friday May 22 and was told I was being dropped on July 31st. I was told I had no alternatives. I must have missed the first notice, this is news to me. I have been with Sonic since I can't remember when, I feel like I've been kicked to the curb. I was under the impression our street lines had been upgraded to fiber optic in our area although I do have copper line from the street. Is this the issue? I'm confused.

Hey Randy,
We emailed Legacy customers who were eligible for an upgrade to IP Broadband (FTTN) about the sunsetting of the service however it sounds like the email never got to you. This may have been caused by an outdated contact email on your Sonic account. Please DM me if you are using a new email that we might not have. We will reach out again, most likely by email, before customers service is cut off so it's important that its up to date.

Confused customer here.
Just sent (via email) the following.
[Summary: Is my DSL ending or is it not ending July 31?]

Hello,

There is much confusion in Sonic's forums regarding the ending of DSL. An example:

viewtopic.php?t=15046&p=54382#p54382

In this thread, on May 18, Dan T of Sonic says that "sunset" of DSL has been postponed.

On May 25, user itujunga says that he was told on May 22 that he was being dropped July 31.

Dan T (May 18) and Spencer W (June 8), both of Sonic, refer to "legacy". What is "legacy?" I suspect that since I've had DSL for 18 years my service is "legacy."

I have been a Sonic customer since 2000, and a DSL customer since 2002. I have received no communications from Sonic; am I affected? Am I losing service July 31? (I do get the monthly billing statement.)

Thank you.

"Legacy DSL" refers to a specific DSL service and is not the same as our Fusion DSL product. Legacy DSL was one of the first products we offered and very few customers are still currently using it. A good way to see what service you are using is to check your invoice, it will be listed on it. After reviewing your account, you would not be impacted by the sunsetting of Legacy DSL.

To add to Spencer’s comment, after review and due to COVID as well, we have paused any plans to retire Legacy DSL, and service will continue indefinitely at this point.

Yes, similar issue. Received an email- Legacy ADSL is ending- upgrade, which apparently(?) isn't available here, then got an email saying service would be extended due to the pandemic, but nothing more.

Sent an email to Sonic support seeking clarification/confirmation, which has yet to be answered, aside from the automated response.

Absolutely hate needing go to Suddenlink as an ISP, despite its basic service costing less and proposed speed being around 30x my current rate. Not in any way a power user anymore, so don't need much bandwidth, but despise Suddenlink, their practices, and being forced to pay for the privilege.

Little to no other option.
