Mesh Wifi

Been thinking about setting up a mesh WiFi to go with my Sonic Fiber. I know Sonic rents the Eero unit. But would like to avoid the rental and go with my own.

So between the two- Google WiFI and Eero- do people have a preference- one easier to set up on Sonic? Also, if I get an Eero myself, does that mean I no longer need to RG and can return it and not get charged?

Correct, you can avoid the monthly RG fee by using your own router / mesh network. You would lose Sonic support and any new member discount promotions that you may have tho.

The Eero and Google should both be equally easy to set up. You can always rent the Eero from Sonic for now and see how you like it. It's only a couple dollars more than their regular RG. Personally I would wait a couple months for the Wifi 6 mesh systems to come out.

Hi Tenbert,

I know people who have their own Eero and they are happy with it. I use Google WiFi and am happy with it too. With either one of them, you no longer need the RG.

Keep in mind though, that if you are in your first year of service and have a discounted rate, you will lose the discount if you return the RG.

In the first year, everybody should get the Sonic Box since the $10 discount only applies if you take their hardware in year 1.
I am usually a fan of buying rather than renting as well but in this case I rented.

1. if you rent their box it means you get support including coming to the house and fixing things even if it turns out you messed something up, free of charge. If you don't rent, you pay for that.

2. If there is a new model of eero I assume it is easy to swap them out if they break you get a new one. Router hardware gets obsolete quickly so renting seems to make some sense.

I’m going to try to set up a Samsung Mesh WiFi with the router and two extenders. Anyone know whether this will work?
