I've been having issues with multiple Google services on various devices for about a week, but only when using sonic.net VPN.

I first noticed being unable to install apps or app updates from Play store. This happens on two different Android phones, but only when on my home wifi (that is routed through sonic.net VPN) or when using the VPN directly on the phone. Using mobile data or a different wifi without a VPN works fine.

There's also issues with Play music and Youtube where streaming is either slow to start or doesn't start at all. Apple devices seem to be affected too.

I haven't seen issue with any other services and transfer speeds seem fine.

Snooping an app update attempt includes this failed connection:

Code: Select all

14:33:06.804328 IP 192.168.1.129.35368 > 209.148.113.237.https: Flags [S], seq 2560999492, win 65535, options [mss 146
0,sackOK,TS val 15905051 ecr 0,nop,wscale 8], length 0
14:33:06.828639 IP 209.148.113.217 > 192.168.1.129: ICMP net 209.148.113.237 unreachable, length 36
Reverse DNS lookup:

Code: Select all

$ host 209.148.113.237
237.113.148.209.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer cache.google.com.
If I'm reading the whois right, this is a sonic.net IP:

Code: Select all

network:Class-Name:network
network:Auth-Area:209.148.96.0/19
network:ID:NETBLK-SONIC-209-148-96-0.209.148.96.0/19

Same issue here when using Sonic's production VPN server (currently down again as of 2:10am) as well as the beta server. I don't have this issue when routing over ATT or a different VPN provider like PIA.

Code: Select all

06:19:06.844219 IP Galaxy-S9.x.lan.57530 > sfo07s16-in-f74.1e100.net.https: tcp 0
06:19:06.849359 IP Galaxy-S9.x.lan.50086 > cache.google.com.https: tcp 0
06:19:06.875147 IP sfo07s16-in-f74.1e100.net.https > Galaxy-S9.x.lan.57530: tcp 0
06:19:06.880696 IP 307.ae4.gw.equinix-sj.sonic.net > Galaxy-S9.x.lan: ICMP net cache.google.com unreachable, length 36
At first I thought it may have been a side effect of configuring my pfSense box for load balancing/fallback between Sonic's two VPN servers but cache.google.com appears to be the common denominator here.

Our Network Operations team has made a routing change that we believe should have resolved this issue. Could you please retest and let us know if you're still experiencing problems?
