Speedtest tends to give me download numbers in the 8.5-10.5 Mbps range, while the modem and 611 status alike say the line is configured for 7284 Kbps down. How is this possible? Is the line status less than the actual achievable performance or are the Speedtest numbers not to be trusted?

The test you used was probably "compensating" for protocol overhead.

Speedtest numbers are generally not to be trusted, they're simply an estimate, and influenced by a multitude of factors. That said, they generally read low, not high, so you might ask the Speedtest folks what they're doing.
