I respect Sonic's claim that a standardized device with advanced diagnostics may make their job easier and provide for happier subscribers, but given the real performance limits of Fusion and the lack of a bonded-pair offering without the huge dialtone tax, cable modem and U-Verse look quite attractive, even for those of us who shudder at the thought of dealing with those firms.

This is a real issue that we recognize: where loop lengths are short to moderate, Fusion delivers solid performance and can compete.

In areas where the loop is longer, we struggle - and are a value when the voice component is useful for the customer, where they really want a home phone. Of course, our customer support is also a huge poing of differentiation.

We've got a few very exciting new ideas in the queue. The product, footprint, features and future are by no means static.

Dane, I wonder if Annex L (Reach-Extended ADSL for longer distances) might shift the balance for some of
your outlying potential customers, making Fusion acceptable to them. I don't have any actual experience with
Annex L, but it looks like it would add about .5Mbps of bandwidth for longer loops -- see, for example,

You mentioned a few days ago in another thread that Sonic doesn't support Annex L. Is that an equipment
limitation, or a management decision? If the latter, is Annex L on your list of things to try some day?

I don't think Annex L is supported by the DSLAM platform.
