Sonic fiber in San Francisco

I'm investigating Monkeybrains for my apartment building, if things work out, they will be able to drop a gig link to our building, and offer 100meg symmetrical to residents.

Frankly it's due to cloud services and my inability to upload faster than 2 meg/sec. I can't upload a 3GB file on that!

Oh, for goodness' sake, Dane, you're about to get lapped by the big boys. Hire a PR or lobbyist or other method to get the public on your side or Sonic is going to miss its window.

Source? I am not aware of anyone planning such a thing. Just trying to keep to the facts here.

Daniel may have a point. I fear Sonic.net will get screwed over by AT&T's pseudo-fiber rollout, as neighborhood groups and organizations like SF Beautiful will have decreased tolerance for new utility boxes and will more vehemently appeal them as more get approved.

A primary problem is that SF's politicians and project approval process don't recognize the vast differences between these services. Whereas AT&T is switching over to fiber mainly so that it can phase out it's copper network (http://gigaom.com/2012/11/07/heres-atts ... ca-behind/), Sonic.net wants to provide true gigabit internet service to SF. We need to educate the public so that they understand that significantly faster service can be achieved with fewer/smaller boxes.

Sonic.net should seriously consider getting PR backing from industry leaders in the city (like Ron Conway's sf.citi - http://www.sfciti.com/)

Meanwhile AT&T wants to get in on the action and wants the same terms Google got while they "plan" on implementing a new fiber optic network "capable" of delivering speeds "up to" 1 gigabit per second.

Sure is great to be living in Japan but gigabit service is readily available there unlike in the US. Tokyoites will probably think "ho-hum."

It probably helps a lot that Japan has a strong telecoms regulator. The incumbent telecom (NTT) is prohibited from providing internet services, but provides line shared DSL and FTTH for ISPs to provide service on. The FCC decided to put an end to the mandate for line sharing, and never bothered to require line sharing costs to be equitable (ILECs were allowed to price DSL below the line shared rate, which makes competition pretty tough)

There is a public hearing early next month, but I think the public works department will mostly want to hear from people who are inside the pilot coverage area. There was an objection from someone who works in the area about the fact that we will be placing a utility cabinet on the sidewalk, so that's resulted in some substantial delay.
