By leaving non-rental customers to fend for themselves, the chance of getting hacked equipment on Sonic's network goes up. The Kasda modem seems like a good choice, until you consider that the dodgy firmware update could be good or could be malware.
I will use the modem only a transparent bridge, then add a proper secure router (e.g. Pepwave Sufo Soho https://routersecurity.org/pepwavesurfsofo.php ).
